Beheading (also known as Guillotining) was the most popular execution method because death occurred immediately when the brain detached from the spinal cord. It was a fast, instant, and a guaranteed form of death. Extreme bleeding caused consciousness to be lost within 2-3 seconds.
What about the pain? Saddening, but the level of pain is intense. Even after the head is severed from the body, the pain continues. Many executioners have seen the eyes focus and blink, which means that the head is fully aware of the surroundings.
